Make a Transparent Signature for Documents

Sign once on paper, then reuse a clean transparent signature on PDFs, contracts, and email sign-offs — without paying for e-signature software.

Sign it right the first time

The signature you scan is the signature you'll live with, so make it count:

• Use a black pen — gel or felt-tip. Blue ink and ballpoint look washed out after processing, and pencil is a lost cause.
• Sign on plain white, unlined paper. Lines and paper texture are exactly what you're about to remove; don't give the tool extra work.
• Sign bigger than you normally would — about 2–3 inches wide. A larger signature downscales cleanly; a small one pixelates when you enlarge it.
• Sign it three or four times and pick the best one. Nobody's first attempt is their best.

Photograph or scan the signature

A flatbed scanner is ideal, but a phone photo works if you're careful: lay the paper flat in even light, hold the phone directly above it (not at an angle), and fill the frame with the signature. Watch for your own shadow falling across the paper — step back from your desk lamp or shoot near a window.

Save or export at high resolution. A 300 DPI scan or a full-resolution phone photo gives the cleanest edges.

Remove the paper background

Check the result at high zoom. If faint paper texture or grey smudges survived around the strokes, the original photo was probably underexposed or shadowed — reshoot with more even light rather than fighting the file. A truly clean scan needs no cleanup at all.

Using it in documents

• PDFs: most PDF readers and editors let you insert the PNG as an image stamp or signature. Resize it to fit the signature line.
• Word / Google Docs: insert the image, set text wrapping to "in front of text," and drag it onto the signature line.
• Email sign-offs: a small signature image under your name works, but keep it modest — huge signature images in emails look odd.

One legal note: a pasted image of your signature is fine for everyday paperwork, but some contracts and government forms require a certified e-signature service. When the stakes are high, use the real thing.
