Turn a Selfie Into a Clean Headshot

Your bedroom wall doesn't belong on your LinkedIn profile. Here's how to take a selfie that survives as a headshot — and cut out the messy background behind you.

Take a selfie worth keeping

No background remover can save a blurry, backlit selfie. Get the source photo right first:

1. Face a window. Soft daylight on your face beats any ring light you don't own. Never shoot with a bright window or lamp behind you — your face goes dark and the cutout suffers.
2. Get the phone off your face. Arm's length minimum; a stack of books and the timer is better. Close-up selfies distort your nose and jaw thanks to the wide-angle lens.
3. Eye level, straight on. Hold the camera at eye height. Angles are fine for Instagram; for a headshot, straight-on reads as competent.
4. Use the rear camera if you can. It's sharper than the front camera on every phone. Prop the phone, set the timer, and check the result.

Cut out the background

Selfie-specific gotchas

• Hair against a busy background. A messy bookshelf behind flyaway hair is the hardest edge for any cutout tool. Shoot against the plainest wall you have and the result gets dramatically better.
• Shadows across the face. Overhead room lighting carves shadows under your eyes and nose that read as tired. Window light fixes this for free.
• Over-smoothing. Phone beauty modes blur the line between hair and background, which confuses the AI. Turn beauty filters off before shooting.
• Don't fake a suit. A clean headshot of you in a plain shirt beats a selfie with an AI-generated blazer pasted on. Recruiters can tell.
