Is Deback really free?
Yes. The basic background-removal tool is free to use with no account, no credit system, and no watermark on your downloads. Because processing happens on your device rather than our servers, each image costs us effectively nothing — which is why we can offer it free. If optional premium features (like batch processing) are added later, the basic tool stays free.
Do you upload, see, or store my photos?
No. Your image is read into your browser tab's memory and processed there by the AI model. It is never transmitted to our servers or any third party. When you close the tab, it's gone from memory. The privacy policy documents this architecture precisely.
Then how does the AI work without a server?
Your browser downloads an open-licensed AI segmentation model (about 44 MB, once — then cached) from a public file CDN, and runs it locally using the Transformers.js library with WebGPU or WebAssembly acceleration. Modern phones and laptops are fast enough for this; the model is the same class of technology behind professional background-removal services.
Which image formats are supported?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC/HEIF (iPhone photos), up to 12 MB. Output is always PNG with a transparent background. HEIC decoding depends on your browser — Safari handles it natively; if your browser can't decode a file, you'll get a clear error instead of a broken result. Other formats (TIFF, BMP, GIF) are not currently supported — convert to one of the four first.
Which browsers work?
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, on desktop and mobile. Chrome and Edge can use WebGPU for faster processing; Firefox and Safari use a WebAssembly fallback that works but is slower. Keep your browser updated for the best experience.
Why is the first run slow?
The first visit downloads the AI model weights (about 44 MB). On a typical broadband connection that takes well under a minute; afterwards the model is cached and processing starts immediately.
The result has rough edges / missing pieces. Why?
Automatic segmentation struggles most with fine hair, fur, translucent materials (glass, veils), and low-contrast scenes where the subject blends into the background. Can I use the results commercially?
The cutouts you create are yours, including for commercial use — provided you hold the rights to the source image. Removing a background doesn't change who owns the photo, so only process images you own or are licensed to edit.
Is there a limit on image size?
Uploads are capped at 12 MB. Very large images are downscaled before processing to stay within your device's memory limits, which can slightly soften fine edges. For most web, listing, and presentation uses, the output resolution is more than sufficient.
How is this different from remove.bg?
The core difference is architectural: remove.bg processes your photo on their servers (which is why they need accounts, credits, and paid tiers), while Deback processes it on your device. Our alternatives page compares the options factually. Deback is independent and not affiliated with remove.bg.
Do you offer an API or batch processing?
Not yet. The free tool handles one image at a time. Batch processing and API access are the most-requested future features and are on the roadmap as potential premium offerings.
