How to Remove a Background on Android
Cut out photo backgrounds on any Android phone — no app install required, and a method that never uploads your photo.
Option 1: Browser-based AI (most private)
- Open Chrome and go to the Deback background remover.
- Tap the upload area and choose your photo from the gallery or files.
- On first visit the AI model downloads once (about 44 MB), then the image is processed entirely on your phone — no upload, no account.
- Preview the cutout against the checkerboard and tap Download transparent PNG.
Chrome on Android supports WebGPU on recent versions, which makes processing noticeably faster than the compatibility fallback.
Option 2: Built-in gallery editors
Google Photos and Samsung Gallery both include object-removal and cutout-style features that have improved substantially. They are convenient and offline — but they are general editors, not dedicated background removers, and exporting a true transparent PNG is not always straightforward depending on the app version.
Option 3: Dedicated apps
Background-removal apps on the Play Store range from solid to ad-infested. Read recent reviews before installing anything: the common complaints are aggressive subscriptions, watermarks on free exports, and — worth knowing — most of them upload your photos to process them server-side.
Tips for good results on Android
- Update Chrome. WebGPU acceleration for on-device AI needs a recent Chrome version; older builds fall back to slower CPU processing.
- Close heavy apps first on older phones. AI segmentation uses significant memory; giving the browser room prevents tab reloads.
- Use originals, not compressed shares. Photos forwarded through chat apps are recompressed — open the original from your gallery.
- Check the download location. Chrome saves to your Downloads folder; move the PNG wherever your editor expects it.
